Welcome to Bright Ideas! - August 2008
Bright Ideas is back and we’ve learned a lot over the last month. We toured the country with our “All Eyes On Video” seminar series and spent time with agencies in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York. We heard feedback on inventory quality concerns, DRTV issues and the need for video planning tools.
In response, we wrote columns for AdAge and the Video Insider and included them below. We also developed an online video planning tool and consolidated a slew of industry research to share with media planners across the country. Simply email me and I will send you the planning tool and research.
We also heard questions about planning, pricing and placing Q4 video campaigns. As the world’s largest branded video ad network, we can help you reach any audience target, on professional content sites, with scale, price efficiency, and without ad serving or rich media fees.
Lastly, BrightRoll has been nominated for Best Video Advertising Network by Streaming Media Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards. We’re honored and would appreciate your vote.
Best Regards,
Charlie Whittingham, Vice President, Sales (cwhittingham@brightroll.com)

Bright Ideas
In Tod Sacerdoti’s latest AdAge column, he discusses how convincing clients to use online video involves three key elements: sharing key facts, making specific recommendations and backing all initial video efforts with a strong research effort.
In this AdAge column, Tod discusses the unfortunate trend of third party vendors cleverly packaging “fake pre-roll” offerings to charge pre-roll price to advertisers, walking out the back door with a majority of the ad budget.
In this article, Tod addresses how ad agencies can convince DR (direct response) clients to run online video advertising and how we can develop the broader DROV business category.
Having served over 3 billion video ads in the last couple of years, we have learned a few things about the business. Whether you are buying video ads from a portal, publisher with multiple sites or a video ad network, there are 10 questions we recommend that you ask before committing to the buy.
Bright Campaigns
BrightRoll Showcase: Beijing Olympics 2008
Two Case Studies, Two Very Different Objectives, One Common Solution
Case Study #1 - Global Technology Company / Olympic Sponsor
Goal: Compliment and reinforce Olympic sponsorship and broadcast campaign with online video execution.
Result: During the second and final week of the Beijing Olympics, BrightRoll was asked to execute a 40 million impression online video buy over 25 premium news, entertainment and sports sites. 7 day notice, 3 day turnaround to launch, with 100% completed by closing ceremonies.
Case Study #2 - US Bank Marketer / Non-Olympic Sponsor
Goal: Maintain brand awareness with core targets while avoiding premium network television rates and Olympic-sponsor competitor activity during August and Olympic coverage.
Result: Using high-traffic news, information, sports and weather sites, BrightRoll achieved TV reach + frequency goals and hit brand awareness objectives in a 100% online video campaign during the first three weeks of August .

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What’s it like serving over TWO BILLION ads in less than TWO YEARS?
Well, let’s see… to count to two thousand, counting one number every second continuously, it would take you 34 minutes. Counting to two million at the same rate, it would take you 24 days (that’s counting nonstop, day and night). But counting to two billion would take you 64 years. Yes. Years.
Honestly, we’ve been serving 29 ads per second, every minute of the day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for TWO straight years. In fact, if you wanted to watch these 2 billion ads, it would mean continuously watching 30 second ads non-stop for 1,902 years.
Instead of doing that, we recommend that you join us for cocktails and just take our word for it. We’ve been very busy.
I am coming straight from work, will there be food?
Yes, there will be light and heavy appetizers provided at the event. The CLIFT catering department is expecting people to eat before and after multiple cocktails.
What is the Spanish Suite and where is it?
The Spanish Suite is the most beautiful room at the CLIFT Hotel. The suite is primarily an event space and has stunning views of the city and includes a significant amount of covered outdoor space. The room sits on the fourteenth floor of the hotel and was designed by Philippe Starck, who designed the hotel.
Given that it’s your 2 year anniversary, shouldn’t you really be throwing 2 parties?
Yes, you are right. After our 2 year anniversary party, we will be heading over to SLIDE for an after party. Join us for table service service of Lotus Vodka and kick back to the tracks of DJ Donovan. This will be a casual and informal gathering, so feel free to tell your friends or co-workers to meet you there.

In Tod Sacerdoti’s latest column on the iMedia Connection, he discusses how as online video matures, the large and unmeasured television campaign is losing its appeal. Here’s how to take advantage of existing options without sacrificing potential reach or quality.
In this blog post, Tod discusses the unfortunate trend of vendors in the marketplace selling a mix-mash of low quality video ad units and packaging them as pre-roll. And we thought the definitions of pre-roll and companion banners were well understood!
For years, rich media fees have been a necessary evil. Now they are an unnecessary evil. Learn how to get free video rich media services for your clients.
Bright Campaigns
Case Study #1 - Global Technology Company
Goal: Achieve television scale reach of nearly 40M pre-roll impressions on highly branded inventory in a tight time window of only four weeks.
Result: BrightRoll executed pre-roll buy on 35+ sites, delivering 100% of budget in time allotted and optimization efforts drove largest CTR of all sites on the buy. Campaign was renewed due to pacing and fulfillment performance.
Case Study #2 - National Financial Services Company
Goal: Access super premium, branded video inventory across a wide range of sites with a limited budget.
Result: BrightRoll leveraged internal publisher relationships to decouple video inventory and execute the campaign in full with limited per site economics.
Case Study #3 - Luxury Import Automotive Company
Goal: Source hard to reach high income / outdoor enthusiast demographic inventory using both pre-roll and innovative, large-format video ad units.
Result: BrightRoll leveraged proprietary ad units to drive unusually high play rates and total time viewed relative to other media properties on the buy. Due to performance, second luxury mark added to media buy.

BrightRoll Video Advertising Report
Insights on the Online Video Ecosystem
VideoRoll is a new report with data from both the BrightRoll network and the broader video advertising industry. We store and analyze the data from every ad request, impression, and click and use this to best optimize campaign distribution for our advertising partners.
Every day, we see millions of ad requests from our broad network of publishers. Each month, we analyze this data to produce our VideoRoll Report covering usage, interactivity, hardware capabilities and user-specific data on BrightRoll’s network. Additionally, we scour the web and work with third parties to aggregate industry information that we believe is valuable to understand the ecosystem.
Advertisers want to understand publisher, demographic and user capabilities as they plan their video campaigns. Publishers want to understand campaign data, user capabilities and industry feedback as they try to build audience and maximize the value of their inventory. We hope you’ll find that this data snapshot provides insights into trends in the video ecosystem and please send us any an email with ideas, feedback or to sign up on list for future releases.

BrightRoll is the world’s largest and most trusted video advertising network, having served more than 1 billion advertisements in 12 months. BrightRoll helps major brands and agencies execute “smart video ad campaigns” across the industry’s leading publishers, including over half of the top 100 online media properties in the United States. Methodology
For every ad request BrightRoll analyzes information available in the user’s browser. From this, BrightRoll determines browser, user and video player capabilities, and more a variety of proprietary techniques. The result is a snapshot of the users viewing the more than 100 million monthly ad impressions that flow through BrightRoll’s network. We believe this data will be valuable in identifying and tracking trends, evaluating market readiness and more.
Limits of this Data
Representativeness - BrightRoll does not claim that this information will be necessarily representative of the video advertising industry as a whole or of any particular market. BrightRoll’s traffic is driven by publisher relationships and may be influenced accordingly. Because the data is pulled across ads served millions of web pages, we feel the data will be useful and may help inform your business decision making.

Please see our requirements and then contact us to join the BrightRoll network.
We have aggregated the largest portfolio of highly branded and large volume video advertising on the Internet. With this widely distributed platform we’re enabled to leverage content, demo, context, behavior, and traffic volume for the benefit of our advertiser and publisher partners.
We are always searching for new, high quality inventory to add to our network of publishing partners. If your site has a strong user experience with great video content we’d like to learn more about you.
Please see our requirements and then contact us to join the BrightRoll network.
With BrightRoll, you have the ability to reach your specifically targeted audience.
Most BrightRoll advertisers today are using demographics, content channels or site specific targeting methodologies to reach their consumers. For example, you can choose to target women ages 18-35, a portfolio of sports and auto-related sites, or a specific list of the top ten fashion sites on the web.
For advertisers with more specific targeting needs, BrightRoll offers contextual and behavioral targeting capabilities. You can target videos that include content about basketball or men interested in sports content.
Additionally, BrightRoll can optimize your delivery for specific metrics such as click-through-rate, cost-per-view, or average advertisement viewing. Our optimization engine shifts impressions to the top performing placements, such that the campaign receives the best possible results.
Demographic Targeting
BrightRoll can leverage third party audience data to provide additional demographic targeting on the following metrics:
- Age
- Gender
- Household income
- Education level
- Race
- User geography / country, state, DMA, city and zip code
- Daypart / hour of day, day of week
Contextual & Behavorial Targeting
BrightRoll has a variety of solutions for advertisers with specific contextual or behavioral targeting needs. To learn more about how our advanced targeting solutions can help you execute your current media plan, please contact us.
Optimization
BrightRoll delivers measurable and scalable results due to our proprietary optimization and ad serving technology. Every campaign is delivered, tracked and reported on by BrightRoll and we ensure that your budget is maximized to meet your desired metrics.
For advertisers who want to drive a specific performance metric, such as a click or registration, BrightRoll can optimize the campaign to increase the conversation rate per impression. Sites not meeting the metric can either be turned down or removed for the campaign portfolio.
We require campaigns to be served in high quality, premium environments.
We exclusively work with publishers who offer high quality and branded content, in safe viewing environments, and it is essential that we are able to effectively target the appropriate audience within a site.
Websites applying to the BrightRoll network must meet specific guidelines to join and must be appropriately categorized in order to receive high value ads. We do not accept any of the following types of sites: adult, bot sites, incentivized sites, hate, crime or illegal sites, sites offering pirated content/software, chat/forum websites, controversial sites, or sites in a foreign language.
We completely review all sites prior to including them in our network. Every site must meet our editorial and technical guidelines. Here are our high level requirements:
- Sites must have at least 100,000 video views/month.
- Sites must have at least 250,000 page views/month.
- No unlicensed or copyright infringing content is allowed.
- There can be no adult or other unacceptable content on your site.
- Sites cannot contain information that may constitute libel, defamation, infringement, or otherwise violate the privacy, publicity or other rights of a third party.
For more information on our requirements, please contact us.

BrightRoll was founded by Tod Sacerdoti and Dru Nelson in 2006.
In 2005, Tod was responsible for revenue at Plaxo. A partner at Sequoia Capital introduced him to a small, sister portfolio company named YouTube. The early metrics suggested that changes in bandwidth and consumer interest where beginning to drive massive shifts in online video viewing behavior.
This seismic shift in online video consumption was coupled with a complete lack of scalable video advertising solutions and standards. Nearly every video site was built on custom content management, video player and ad serving technologies, and all completely unprepared to address the broad needs of advertisers and agencies.
Existing ad network solutions, primarily focused on banner inventory, were not optimized for video and it was clear that a new solution was needed. Tod and Dru joined forces shortly thereafter, with the mission to make all branded advertisers “smart video advertisers” and to make the process of buying, executing and optimizing online video campaigns easier.
After months of development, BrightRoll took an initial step in fulfilling this vision by launching the industry’s first contextually targeted video ad unit. The initial product was an instant hit and over a thousand publishers signed up within the first six months.
BrightRoll is now the world’s largest video advertising network. We work with dozens of advertising agencies on campaigns their leading brands, hundreds of publishers on their premium inventory and serve millions of advertisements everyday. In fact, BrightRoll has served over a billion advertisements since our founding.
The rest, they say, is the future.
We help publishers unlock the enormous potential of their inventory.
The typical publisher integration into the BrightRoll Network is for the delivery of pre-roll or mid-roll video advertisements. Since many publishers have unique content management, ad server and player environments, we support many different integration structures designed to meet your needs.
Video Advertisements
BrightRoll typically provides five to thirty second pre-roll video advertisements and/or in-banner click-to-play video advertisements, exclusively from name brand advertisers.
Formats
BrightRoll primarily supports Flash 8 or higher. Depending on the particular publisher environment, we can also support Windows Media, Quicktime, Real Player and custom video player environments. We also support publishers using syndicated video player technologies such as Brightcove, Lightning Cast or VideoEgg.
Methods of Integration
It is anticipated that publishers will prefer one of three integration methods based on their specific needs, revenue goals, inventory constraints and video playing environment:
- Ad Server Integration – For high value inventory monetization with impression guarantees
- Redirect Integration – For unsold inventory monetization without impression guarantees
- Exchange Integration – For management of all unsold inventory
Ad Server Integration
Ad Server Integration is integration into the publisher’s internal ad server or trafficking system. The end goal of an ad server integration is a streamlined trafficking system for both parties.
Redirect Integration
Redirect Integration is integration of BrightRoll as a third party adserver for unsold inventory. The end goal of a redirect integration is to monetize significant amounts of unsold inventory with little or no human intervention into trafficking or campaign management.
Exchange Integration
Exchange Integration is integration of the BrightRoll exchange to manage all unsold inventory. The end goal of a exchange integration is maximize the value of unsold inventory by having all third parties disclose their CPMs dynamically and compete for each ad impression.
